We live in Maarssen, a small town of 41,000 inhabitants on the banks of the river Vecht. It is situated 5km north of Utrecht, a university city of some 250,000 people - the fourth biggest city in the Netherlands, after Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague.

Maarssen is divided roughly into three parts. Firstly Maarssenbroek, which has all been built since the seventies and is largely a dormitory town. The original village of Maarssen (where we live) is on the other side of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and straddles the river Vecht. Thirdly there is a rural hinterland with small villages such as Tienhoven.
